Journey No 18 – 9th to 12th November 2011

9th November 2011

We departed Carrick Castle early afternoon for Liz to go kayaking with a group in the Aberfeldy area for the next two days in the River Lyon and River Tay under instruction from a kayak instructor, ‘Biscuit’.

We parked up for the night at Drummond Hill forestry car park at Kenmore and went for a walk. This was supposed to be a short walk up the hill track before we had dinner however the path which we believed to be circular went on and on and it was getting dark. In the end, we walked around five miles of which the last one and a half miles were on the road in the dark back to the forestry car park!

10th November 2011

In the morning, we met up with the kayaking group and Liz accompanied by Roddy, Alice and Biscuit, the instructor, started off kayaking in the River Lyon at Kenmore where I took photos of them.

Roddy was in his canoe whilst the rest of the group were in river kayaks.

They started off kayaking in the River Lyon that had calm waters. The River Lyon joins the River Tay not far out of Kenmore.

They started kayaking around 10 am and reached Aberfeldy at 3.30 pm after stopping on the way to have a lunch break. Douglas passed the day reading a book on his Kindle in Harrie.

That night we parked up Harrie at the other end of Drummond Hill at Peelers Gate car park that’s up the hill and very quiet. Changed gas over to new 12 kg cylinder.

11th November 2011

In the morning, the group set off from Aberfeldy Bridge and headed down the River Tay to Grandtully. Douglas took Harrie there stopping off at St Mary’s Chapel, outside Grandtully. This 17th century chapel from the outside looked rather like an old stone barn however inside it had a stunning painted ceiling in fantastic condition looked after by Historic Scotland.

Liz had a good two days of river kayaking and learnt a lot in fair weather. She is a regular competant sea kayaker however she wanted to learnt more about kayaking on a river. Next week, she will have another two days of instruction with the same group. After leaving Grandtully, we headed south to Perth where we refuelled with 38.43 ltrs diesel = £51.10 at 119,649 km. That night, we headed across to Loch Lomond and parked up for the night in one of the Loch Lomond laybys that are off the road on the west side of the loch by Luss as we were going to Glasgow the next day.

12th November 2011

We went to the 50+ Show (Retirement Show) at the SECC in Glasgow for a few hours and then did some shopping in Clydebank before heading home. We refuelling in Dumbarton with 23.59 ltrs of diesel = £33.00 at 119,839 km arrived home at 16.30 hrs.

Total mileage for the trip was 485.9 km / 304 miles.
